Linkin park- Numb
The song "Numb" written and performed
by Linkin Park accurately depicts Celia's difficulty growing up and finding
herself. Celia lost her mother to suicide at a young age, only to be brought to
her father, the "world’s greatest illusionist". This title that
Hector Bowen proudly wore, wore off onto Celia thinking by making his only
daughter part of a competition that he needed to win. By forcing his daughter
to be in this competition, he made Celia practice her magic all the time and
barely thought of her as a daughter more or less as an accomplishment, that is
only if she could win the competition that he forces her into. By making Celia
constantly work towards perfecting illusions, bringing pain to her by repeatedly
slicing her fingers so she could learn how to heal herself, and never
acknowledging her accomplishments, Hector makes Celia feel as though there
isn't much to enjoy in life. During her childhood and her teenage years Hector
makes Celia feel isolated and constantly feel like she is never good enough.
"I'm tired of being what you want me to be. Feeling so faithless, lost
under the surface. Don't know what you're expecting of me. Put under the
pressure of walking in your shoes," These lyrics represent Celia because
her father feels that she should be a cut out image of him, and no matter how
hard Celia tries, she feels like she can never please him. "Thousands of
miles away, in a crowded theater that thunders with applause for the man
onstage, hidden in the shadow formed between disused pieces of scenery
backstage, Celia Bowen curls herself into a ball and cries"(34), This
quote shows just how unhappy Celia was and how confined her father made her
feel. “I’m becoming this, all I want to
do, is being more like me and be less like you," Celia eventually finds
refuge in the Circus and finally becomes her own person. Even though she does
become an illusionist, she still is nothing like her father. Celia becomes her
own person, but it wasn't easy since her father made he feel so numb.

Numb lyrics
I'm tired of being what you want me to be Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface Don't know what you're expecting of me Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) Every step that I take is another mistake to you (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) I've become so numb, I can't feel you there Become so tired, so much more aware I'm becoming this, all I want to do Is be more like me and be less like you Can't you see that you're smothering me, Holding too tightly, afraid to lose control? 'Cause everything that you thought I would be Has fallen apart right in front of you. (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) Every step that I take is another mistake to you. (Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow) And every second I waste is more than I can take. I've become so numb, I can't feel you there, Become so tired, so much more aware I'm becoming this, all I want to do Is be more like me and be less like you. And I know I may end up failing too. But I know You were just like me with someone disappointed in you. I've become so numb, I can't feel you there, Become so tired, so much more aware. I'm becoming this, all I want to do Is be more like me and be less like you. I've become so numb, I can't feel you there. (I'm tired of being what you want me to be) I've become so numb, I can't feel you there. (I'm tired of being what you want me to be) |
The fray- Where the story ends
In the song "Where the Story Ends" by the Fray it shows an accurate description of Marcos and Celia’s relationship. In the book they were never sure about how everything was going to play out, considering they were in a competition that only allowed one winner, and the other would have to die. "I can't keep holding on. Every night it becomes more difficult. And I....I have to let you win"(420). This quote shows how Celia pulled away from Marco because she wanted him to win. "All we know is distance. We're close and then we run. Kiss away the difference, I know you hate this one," these lyrics show how Celia tried to push Marco away, she wanted to let him go because she knew that her feelings were becoming strong. They were so close to having happiness but than they found out there could only be one winner of the competition while the loser would have to die. "But this is how the story ends. Or have we just begun," these lyrics describes how in the end Celia and Marco decided that they needed happiness and both jumped in the fire, they saved themselves and also the circus. Their story didn't end, it was just beginning.

Where the Story Ends Lyrcis
Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before Tell you what I'll do instead, lay my body down on the floor To forget what I've done, silhouette til the good lord come All we know is distance We're close and then we run Kiss away the difference I know you hate this one Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, you've got All you ever knew of home, you're scared scared to see Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go All we know is distance We're close and then we run Kiss away the difference I know you hate this one But this is how the story ends Or have we just begun To kiss away the difference I know you hate this one The violins make no sound And I begin to feel the ground All we know is distance We're close and then we run Kiss away the difference I know you hate this one But this is where the story ends Or have we just begun To kiss away the difference I know you hate this one |
